Nasya Oil: Detox for Your Head

by Jitka Robinson | Jan 31, 2016 | About Ayurveda, Detox + Panchkarma

Breathe in and out. Inhale and Exhale.

The nose creates a very important pathway to the brain and to consciousness, according to Ayurveda. The life force or prana enters the body via the nose when we are breathing. Being able to breathe properly ensures the healthy flow of prana. Everyone who experienced a full, stuffed, runny, congested nose, noticed the sudden lack of energy.  When congestion occurs, which can happen easily, especially during cold weather, the use of Nasya oil helps to remove the extra fluids through the nose.

Nasya Oil is a special herbal oil used in the nostrils for instant nurturing, lubrication, soothing of the tissues, and cleansing process. It helps relieve sinus congestion and if used daily, it also reduces the tension in the head.

Nasya oil keeps the epithelial tissue in the nostrils hydrated and less receptive to dryness, pollen, allergens, pollutants, and nose bleeds. It also promotes clarity, awareness, and concentration and it is traditionally believed to improve the quality of voice and also strengthen sight.  It is a wonderful remedy for balancing Vata Dosha, therefore you will benefit most from using Nasya oil during the Vata season – autumn or when the weather is cold, dry, and when seasons are changing.

It is recommended to apply Nasya Oil in the mornings and evenings.

Application direction:

Tilt your head back to allow the oil to easily reach the nostrils. It is best to lie down and tip your head into extension.  Inhale deeply, completely exhale and hold the exhale. Apply 2 drops of oil into each nostril. Then inhale deeply. You may wish to pinch your nostrils with your thumb and index finger as you take this deep inhale to allow the oil to go further in.

Use it more often, if you experience Vata imbalance in your upper body. It is best to not apply immediately before lying down to sleep at bedtime, most ideal is to apply at least 30 minutes before lying down.

Besides the application with the dropper, you may also choose to put 1 drop on your index finger to apply a thin coating of the oil in your nostrils. This is especially beneficial when spending time in the air conditioning or traveling by airplane.

Note: Keep the dropper clean, so if it has touched your nostrils, wipe the tip of the dropper.
