Cucumbers are very high in water content and very low in calories. They have potential anti-diabetic, lipid lowering and antioxidant activity. Cucumbers have a cleansing action within the body. They remove accumulated pockets of old waste materials and chemical toxins, making them a popular choice when exploring cucumber health benefits in everyday diets.

The scientific name for cucumber is Cucumis sativus. It belongs to the same botanical family as melons, squash and pumpkins, the Cucurbitaceae family. Cucumbers are a rich source of triterpene phytonutrients called cucurbitacins. Cucurbitacins A, B, C, D and E are all contained in fresh cucumber. They have been the subject of active and ongoing research to determine the extent and nature of their anti-cancer properties.1

Based on Ayurveda principles, cucumbers pacify Pitta dosha. They are cold in potency and hence can provide a cooling effect to the body when consumed. So, are cucumbers good for you? Absolutely—especially when you’re looking for something that helps cool the system from within.
