Sister Vedic Sciences: Ayurveda, Yoga, and Jyotish

by | Mar 20, 2025 | About Ayurveda, New Age Ayurveda

In Vedic tradition, Ayurveda, Yoga, Jyotish (Vedic astrology) are known as sister Vedic sciences, deeply connected and rooted in ancient wisdom.

The word “Yoga” means union, yet when commonly used, it often refers to yoga asanas or postures. However, asana is one of the eight limbs (ashita = eight, anga = limbs) of Yoga as described in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Here, the word “sutra” means thread, something that ties everything together.

Since everything in the universe is interconnected, the ancient seers (rishis) of India cognized the Vedas, the world’s oldest recorded texts. These include the Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, Rig Veda, and Atharva Veda. Alongside them are the Upavedas, which expand upon Vedic knowledge, including Ayurveda, and the Vedangas, which are the limbs of the Vedas—one of which is Jyotish (Vedic astrology).

The Interwoven Nature Ayurveda, Yoga, Jyotish

The vast ocean of Vedic sciences is intricately woven together. Just as we cannot separate our physical and mental bodies, we cannot separate the interconnected aspects of our lives. Your health is linked to your home lives. Both of these are part of the karmic patterns indicated in your astrological charts. Furthermore, our health is connected to how we take our seat (asana) in the world. Do we hold a steady pose, or do we waver? Can we regain balance after stumbling? Can we truly surrender in child’s pose, or do we hold back?

Ayurveda: The Healing Science of the Vedas

Among the Vedic sciences, Ayurveda is the primary healing modality and is deeply intertwined with yoga in the East Iit is the healing science most closely associated with Yoga. In India, an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner is typically well-versed in Sanskrit (the language of the scriptures), yoga, Jyotish, Palmistry (Hasta Samudrika Shastra), and Vāstu Shastra (the Vedic science of architecture, similar to Feng Shui). Using pulse diagnosis, an Ayurvedic physician can assess health and recommend a personalized combination of diet, herbal remedies, yoga practices, and lifestyle adjustments. This often incorporates insights from one’s astrological chart.

Concept of a Jyotish: The Cosmic Roadmap of Karma

An astrological birth chart serves as a map or a blueprint of an individual’s karma (actions and their consequences). It provides insight into health, daily routines, and potential challenges.
The word karma means action—every past, present, and future action leaves an imprint and creates an impact. For instance, you can cultivate good health by practicing yoga regularly under the guidance of a qualified instructor. You can even push yourself beyond your limits, risking exhaustion or injury. Karma is not something you passively receive—it is a dynamic force that you actively shape.

In Jyotish science, the ascendant (first house) represents a person’s overall vitality and personality. Additionally, various houses in the chart correlate with health. The chart reveals daily routines, exercise patterns, chronic ailments, and acute health issues.

Each individual experiences a unique sequence of planetary cycles (Dashas) from birth to death, determined by the Moon’s placement at birth. Jyotish also employs harmonic (divisional) charts, which provide deeper insights into health and vitality. By combining astrological readings with Ayurvedic diagnosis and health history, one can discover guiding principles for a balanced life and help determine the best approaches to maintaining well-being.

The Interplay of Natal and Transitory Influences

A natal chart provides static indications of a person’s health, but planetary transits and cycles create dynamic influences. For example, during a Saturn period, an astrologer examines Saturn’s natal placement and transit, assessing its impact on an individual’s life and health.

Healing Through Remedies: Ayurveda & Jyotish

Based on these astrological insights, remedies can be prescribed for both challenging and auspicious planetary periods. Some of the remedies include:

  • Sanskrit Mantras – These have profound healing effects on the organs and subtle energy bodies. Since each Sanskrit sound carries a unique vibration, correct pronunciation is crucial. Mispronounced mantras can alter their effects, making it essential to learn from native speakers whenever possible. Many sounds in Sanskrit are not part of the English dialect. It is best to learn from a native speaker whenever possible. Even the word “mantra” is often mispronounced—it should be “man” (as in Monday or mundane) and “tra” (as in truck).
  • Gemstone Therapy – Specific gemstones may be recommended, with precise guidelines on when to start or stop wearing them.
  • Charitable Acts & Rituals – Fasting on certain days, eating specific foods, wearing auspicious colors, or reading sacred texts can help mitigate challenging planetary influences.

Health, Environment & Vāstu Shāstra

Health is also influenced by one’s environment. We look not only at what our bodies ingest, but also at the environment in which we live. Vāstu Shāstra, the ancient Vedic science of harmonious spatial arrangement, suggests that improper placements of doors, windows, furniture, and objects can create disharmony, leading to relationship conflicts, financial instability, or health issues. These influences are often subtle but impactful, requiring careful consideration.

Remedies are often prescribed for periods when there may be challenging indications found in a chart. There are also indications in an astrological chart that signify a good time to commence certain health-promoting activities. Health-promoting activities include diet and daily regimens. Both the chart and the lines and shape of the palm indicate dietary preferences.
