A Beginner’s Guide To Understanding Ayurveda

by The Ayurveda Experience | Oct 17, 2023 | About Ayurveda

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the science of life. It explains the nature of everything in the universe, and it is the art of living in harmony with nature.

The word Ayurveda is made up of two Sanskrit words ‘Ayu‘, meaning life, or more specifically, the life process, and ‘Veda‘, meaning knowledge. So Ayurveda can aptly be defined as the knowledge of life and the life process.

Ayurveda is most well-known as an alternative form of health care. It dates back more than 5000 years. The first written records of Ayurveda are found in the Vedas, the oldest and largest body of knowledge history.

This ancient Indian healthcare system is focused on keeping people healthy and happy. It does this by preserving physical and mental well-being, preventing diseases, and promoting longevity.

Ayurveda uses various methods like daily routine (Dincharaya) and seasonal routines (Ritucharya), codes of conduct, and special rejuvenating preparations called rasayanas.

However, with rapid advances in technology and changes in daily lifestyle, you may wonder if Ayurveda is still effective.

Ayurveda, being holistic in nature, addresses both physical and mental health issues through the use of natural herbal medicines, dietary changes, and lifestyle adjustments. It believes in the connection between individuals, their health, and the universe, considering factors such as a person’s body constitution (prakriti) and related imbalances in individual doshas

Types of Dosha as per Ayurveda

Ayurvedic practitioners provide personalized dosha-specific treatments, which include advice based on herbal compounds, dietary advice, exercise, and lifestyle recommendations. When followed correctly, Ayurveda is the most sacred and profound form of medicine and holistic well-being.
